Caritas of Birmingham and the Community of Caritas
Caritas of Birmingham is a mission located about 20 miles southeast of Birmingham, Alabama. Caritas was founded by Terry Colafrancesco, the owner of a large landscape excavating company in 1986 for the purpose of spreading Catholicism.
After, the Terry's experience in Medjugorje, he began to see through prayer that Caritas' mission was to solely be devoted to Medjugorje and the messages of the Virgin Mary given there. After receiving several private messages from Our Lady through Medjugorje visionary Marija, the direction that Terry would take would cause him great suffering and persecution. However, he continued in the mission Our Lady confided to him, and today Caritas of Birmingham is celebrating 25 years of the ministry of Our Lady.
When Medjugorje visionary Marija first came to the Terry's home in 1988, Our Lady was only giving messages in Medjugorje on the 25th of the month. However, when Our Lady came to Alabama, She began to give messages almost everyday. It was here that the Community of Caritas found it's birth, in Terry and his family's home.
In 1988, Medjugorje visionary Marija was at the home of Terry and his family for almost 3 months. During that time, Our Lady told Marija that She desired a community started there. Terry questioned Marija regarding this, as to what kind of community Our Lady was referring to. Marija gave some indications, and he left it at that. He and his family were the first community that existed at the site, and Our Lady showed him and his family many things through prayer.
Several years later, the first outside members came and felt the call to join Terry and his family. Since then, the Community of Caritas has taken on the work of operating the mission of Caritas of Birmingham.
Caritas is home of the famous apparition sites, the Bedroom of Apparitions and the Field of Apparitions. Caritas of Birmingham is also home of the world-renowned Patriotic Rosary.
